Background
The manufacturer produces precision quartz components used in semiconductor manufacturing. In this application, delicate quartz rings must be loaded into specialized tool holders on two CNC machines.
The process requires a combination of precise positioning, vibration-free motion, and controlled compliance during final engagement. The required total placement accuracy was ±0.02 mm (20 microns).
Previously, the operation was performed manually by skilled operators. A previous automation attempt also failed to meet the application's requirements for positioning accuracy and controlled insertion.
Deployed Robot Solution
Neuromeka deployed a Nuri20 collaborative robot with a custom spindle-equipped end-effector and force/compliance control to automate the loading process.
The system combines precise robot motion with controlled compliance during final insertion, allowing the robot to approach, align, and engage the quartz component with minimal vibration.
The Nuri20 performs the following process:
- Pick Up Component. The robot picks up a quartz ring using the custom spindle-equipped end-effector.
- Move to CNC Machine. It moves the component toward the CNC machine using controlled, vibration-free motion.
- Approach Tool Holder. The robot approaches the tool holder and begins the insertion process.
- Compliant Engagement. Compliance control allows the robot to accommodate small positional differences during final engagement.
- Seat Component. The component is aligned and seated in the final position.
- Release and Retract. The robot releases the component and retracts.
- Repeat for Second Machine. The process is repeated for the second CNC machine.
